Emanuel Swedenborg offers a unique definition of temptation. His conception of temptation is a much more intense and painful process than simply craving junk food. Perhaps a better word for Swedenborg’s conception of ‘temptation’ is a spiritual crisis, or trial. Although God is not the source of spiritual trials, He can provide us with the truth and goodness that leads us through the spiritual crisis and further in our spiritual regeneration. In working through spiritual crises, we are better equipped with the intelligence and wisdom necessary to ascertain what is good and true rather than evil and false. In this episode, we discuss how this process works and offer examples that may help us to better understand this intriguing aspect of Swedenborg’s religious philosophy.
